Privacy policy

The short version
Speak Like Natives is a static website. There are no accounts, no sign-up forms, no cookies and no advertising trackers. We count visits with a privacy-friendly analytics tool that doesn't identify you. We don't ask for your personal information, and we don't sell anything you give us.
Who is responsible
The data controller for this site is its operator, T.B. Pearson, based in Spain and reachable at hola@speaklikenatives.com. Where we process anything at all, the legal basis is legitimate interest (keeping the site running and secure) or, for email you send us, taking steps you've requested.
What we store on your device
Your light/dark theme preference and your learning progress (which lessons, drills and scenes you've done), kept in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device, which is also why your progress doesn't follow you to another browser. Clearing your browser data removes them. We do not set cookies.
The microphone
Scene pages offer an optional "say it" control that uses your browser's own speech recognition — it listens only after you press it, and we never record, store, or receive your voice. Some browsers process speech recognition on their vendor's servers (Chrome, for example, may send audio to Google), under that browser's own privacy policy; if you'd rather not, tapping a reply does exactly the same thing.
Server logs
The site is served through Amazon Web Services (CloudFront). Like virtually all web hosting, AWS keeps standard access logs — IP address, pages requested, browser type, and timestamps — which we use only to keep the site running and diagnose problems. These logs are retained for a limited period and are not combined with any other data. AWS acts as our processor; as a global CDN it may handle requests outside the EEA, under the safeguards AWS provides for such transfers (the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses).
If you email us at hola@speaklikenatives.com, we receive your address and whatever you send. We use it only to reply and never add you to any list without asking.
External links
The site links to external services — most notably Amazon, where our books are sold. Once you follow such a link, that site's own privacy policy applies. If we ever join an affiliate program that pays us a commission on those links, we will say so clearly on this page and in the site footer.
Analytics
We use Umami Cloud, a privacy-focused analytics service, with its data stored in the EU. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not identify you or follow you to other sites. It records the pages visited, the site you came from, your browser, operating system, device type and country (worked out from your IP address, which it does not store), and a few actions: clicking one of our Amazon book links (which book, on which page, and which part of the page), starting and finishing a course, finishing a scene, and pressing play on audio. We use it only to learn which parts of the site are useful; the legal basis is legitimate interest. Umami acts as our processor.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. Given how little we collect, the honest answer to an access request will usually be "an email you sent us, if any" — but ask anytime at contact. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Spain, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (aepd.es).

If this policy changes, the new version appears here with an updated date. Material changes are noted here: on 22 October 2026 we added Umami analytics (see above).
