The three levels
Beginner
Right now, Spain mostly happens *to* you. You can say hello and order something cold, but «¿qué te pongo?» still catches you off guard and the ñ is not yet your friend. Good news: this is the level where a few weeks of the right phrases — not grammar drills — pays off fastest.
Intermediate
You can get the beers in, text a landlord and survive a Sunday lunch — right up until three natives start talking at once. You understand Spanish; the next job is sounding Spanish: the «llevo dos años» constructions, the register calls, the slang families. That's exactly the gap the books were written for.
Advanced
You argue, joke and probably flirt in Spanish, waiters have stopped answering you in English, and «quilombo» doesn't scare you. What's left is the last 10% of polish: subjunctive reflexes, email register, and the idioms natives don't even notice they're using. Finishing school starts below.
