Chivo

Cool, great, brilliant — the Salvadoran adjective of approval, and literally a goat.

Hear it in context

  • ¡Qué chivo tu carro!

    Your car is amazing!

  • Está bien chivo el lugar, te va a gustar.

The place is really cool — you'll like it.

  • —Me dieron el trabajo. —¡Chivo!

    'I got the job.' 'Brilliant!'

What It Actually Means

Chivo is the Salvadoran word for good, cool, excellent — the local occupant of a slot held by chévere in Venezuela and Colombia, chido in Mexico and bacán in Peru and Chile. It works as an adjective (una fiesta bien chiva), as a standalone exclamation (¡chivo!) and in the superlative chivísimo, which Salvadorans deploy without irony.

Where It Comes From

Literally, a chivo is a young goat, and that is where the honest account stops. How the animal came to mean “excellent” is not documented — the folk explanations on offer are reconstructions after the fact, and none of them has evidence behind it. Spanish has form here: Costa Rica built its own approval word, chiva, out of the same animal, apparently independently, which suggests the goat was simply available rather than meaningful.

How Natives Use It

Mostly of things, plans, places and news rather than of people: a car, a concert, a beach, a piece of luck. It takes the Central American intensifier bien (bien chivo) more readily than muy, and it pairs naturally with the rest of the register — ¡puchica, qué chivo! is a complete Salvadoran reaction. Younger speakers stack it with imported English (está bien chivo, bro), which is the diaspora feeding back home.

Common Pitfall

Outside El Salvador the word reverts to livestock. In most of the Spanish-speaking world a chivo is a goat and little else, except in the fixed expression chivo expiatorio (scapegoat), so paying a Mexican or Spanish friend the compliment qué chivo will get you a blank look at best. Note also that it is a judgement on things, not a way to describe a person as attractive — for that, Salvadorans reach elsewhere.
