Friki
A geek or obsessive — from English "freak", but in Spain it is mostly friendly and often self-applied.
Hear it in context
Soy un friki de las series de ciencia ficción.
I'm a sci-fi series geek.
Mi hermano es un poco friki, pero es majísimo.
My brother's a bit of an oddball, but he's lovely.
Fuimos a una convención friki en Madrid.
We went to a geek convention in Madrid.
What It Actually Means
Friki is Spain’s word for a geek: someone with an intense hobby, usually comics, games, films or technology. The English original, “freak”, is stronger. In Spain friki is often said proudly, as in soy un friki de los videojuegos.
How Natives Use It
As a noun for a person, as an adjective for things (una peli friki), and in the expression ser un friki de + a subject. Calling a stranger friki can still sting if the tone is dismissive.
Common Pitfall
Do not read it as “freak” in the English sense of a monster or an outcast. It sits closer to “nerd” or “geek”, though the oddball sense is there too.
