The Story So Far

Julia crossed the ocean to sell the bar her unmentionable uncle Aurelio left her. In Episode 2 she met Manu, who kept Bar Casilda alive for eighteen years, discovered four months of unpaid rent and a landlord called Robles — and, taped under the till, a key to the locked back room with her name on the envelope.

Language Highlights

• negated communication + subjunctive — “jamás nadie había mencionado que hubieran trabajado juntos”: deny that something was said, and the verb slides into the (pluperfect) subjunctive.
• preferir que + subjuntivo — “preferí que me creyeran ladrón”: preference verbs govern the subjunctive, here carrying the whole tragedy of the plot.
• se + indirect object for the blameless accident — “se nos acaba la paciencia”: patience runs out, money gets lost, keys get forgotten — and grammatically, nobody did it.
• comparisons with clauses — “más plata de la que había visto junta”: quantity comparisons connect to clauses with “de + article + que”.
• literary comparison molds — “como quien deja caer una piedra en un estanque”, “con cara de tener todo el futuro por delante”: steal the frames, refill the pictures.
• the dialect duet, final round — cortar/colgar, atajar, pavadas, prolijidad, “a esta altura” — and Robles’s cold, flawless “usted”, the register Spanish reserves for money.
