Julia calls the neighbours of number 14 into the bar to propose the impossible: that they buy the building themselves. Between an accountant mother with a spreadsheet, a Riojan winemaker with a credit line, an offer from Meridiano Patrimonial addressed to each owner individually, and one neighbour who has already signed something, the word "nosotros" gets tested for the first time.

The Story So Far

Episode 6 gave Bar Casilda its name back — Begoña from Logroño, the sealed letters, the Rioja that will finally be poured under its own surname — and ended with two men in suits measuring the shopfront and Julia proposing the most dangerous first-person plural in Spanish: que lo compremos nosotros. Episode 7 is the meeting where “nosotros” has to produce a number.

Language Highlights

verbs of influence take the subjunctive — propongo que compremos, hizo que se inclinaran, para que se notara, sin que nadie se lo pidiera: four different triggers, one mood.
antecedents in doubt — “¿no habrá alguien que deba un favor?”: if the person may not exist, the relative clause goes subjunctive. It has been the grammar of this whole series.
the impersonal se, in rhetoric — “no se compra el edificio, se compran las dudas de uno por uno”: how Spanish states a hard truth without naming a culprit.
según lo que cada uno pudiera poner — unknown quantity, subjunctive; compare the indicative version and hear the difference.
the peninsular imperative — poned, dejadme: the vosotros forms that Julia, a porteña, still hears as slightly theatrical.
voseo under pressure — “contá hasta el jueves”: which language a person defaults to when it matters is a characterisation device, not a typo.
the meeting vocabulary — convocar, a título individual, participaciones, cooperativa, planta baja: the Spanish of a room deciding something.
