The Scene

Ana braves the cheerful chaos of a Mexico City mercado to buy fruit and comes away with much more: a mango vendor’s full repertoire of warmth, from “güerita” to a free tangerine. It’s the friendliest possible introduction to the market phrases — and the Mexicanisms — that no textbook dialogue ever includes.

Vocabulary Highlights

• ¿a cómo está el kilo? — the natural market way to ask a price, especially for things sold by weight.
• ¿qué le damos? — “what can we get you?”, the standard vendor greeting at any stall.
• mande — Mexico’s polite “what?” when you didn’t catch something; answering “¿qué?” can sound curt there.
• ahorita — the famously elastic Mexican “right now,” which can mean anything from immediately to eventually.
• güerita / marchanta — affectionate terms vendors use for customers; hearing them means you’re being treated warmly, not singled out.
• el pilón — the little free extra a vendor adds to your purchase, like Ana’s tangerine — a beloved market tradition.
