Nueva en Madrid: A Neighbor Says Hello

The Scene

Claire, a new arrival from Dublin, has just moved into a shared building in Madrid. On the way down the stairs she bumps into Rocío, a neighbor from the second floor, and what starts as an awkward “we haven’t met” turns into the makings of a friendship.

Vocabulary Highlights

• no me he presentado — “I haven’t introduced myself,” the natural opener when you realize you’ve skipped names.
• ¿de dónde eres? — the standard first question for a newcomer; answer with “soy de…”
• ¿a qué te dedicas? — how natives ask about work or studies, far more common than “¿cuál es tu profesión?”
• quedar — the essential verb for arranging to meet up again, distinct from just “meeting” someone for the first time.
• hemos quedado a las diez — past tense used to describe a future meeting time, once the plan is set.
• llevar + tiempo + gerundio — expresses how long you’ve been doing something, e.g. “llevar tres días viviendo aquí.”
