The Story So Far

A new episode of our advanced serial: El Río y la Gran Vía follows Julia Etcheverry, a thirty-five-year-old porteña, from a Buenos Aires winter to a Madrid heatwave, after a letter from a notary tells her that the uncle her family refused to name has left her a bar near Gran Vía.

Language Highlights

• como si + imperfect subjunctive — “como si fuera a significar otra cosa”, “como si quisieran subrayar”: after “como si”, Spanish always uses the imperfect (or pluperfect) subjunctive for the unreal comparison — never the present indicative.
• reported speech one tense back — “la carta decía que había muerto y que me había dejado un bar”; “me dijo que hiciera lo que me pareciera mejor”: statements shift to the pluperfect, commands shift to the imperfect subjunctive.
• conditional perfect for past conjecture — “mi tío habría hecho esa misma cola”: “habría hecho” here means “he would presumably have done”, speculating about the past rather than stating a hypothetical.
• voseo imperatives — “decime”, “andá”, “vendé”, “cobrá”, “volvete”: Argentine commands drop the final -d of the vosotros form and keep the stress on the last syllable of the verb, unlike peninsular “dime”, “ve”, “vende”.
• transatlantic vocabulary — Julia’s Argentina says “laburo”, “valija”, “anteojos”, “vieja”, “hendija”, “cuadras”; Spain will answer with “curro”, “maleta”, “gafas”, “rendija”. The serial keeps both dialects deliberately side by side.
• notaría vs. escribanía — the legal professional who handles wills is a “notario” in Spain but an “escribano” in Argentina; Julia’s inheritance lives exactly on that border.
